Ways to Freshen Your Garbage Disposal

Kitchens that are equipped with garbage disposals have an advantage as this great appliance makes household duties less demanding. But if not operated or maintained properly, a garbage disposal can easily be a breeding ground for strange smells in your kitchen. Simply letting water run down the drain throughout the day won't kill bacteria — you need to sanitize! Before it becomes an issue, try the following simple steps to get your sink and disposal clean and safe, without the use of harmful chemicals or cleaners.

 1) Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are a natural and easy way to deodorize your garbage disposal. Just take some lemons (limes, oranges, or grapefruits), cut them into small pieces and run them through your garbage disposal. The oils and juice from the fruits and peels naturally clean the walls inside the garbage disposal and create a fresh, long-lasting scent by deodorizing your drain. Also, the acidic properties of the citrus fruits will help sterilize the blades and break up any stubborn food deposits.

2) Ice Cubes

Fill the garbage disposal with a handful of ice cubes, turn on the water, and allow it to run for a minute or two. This can help sharpen the blades and break up any grease build-up, which has accumulated. You can add a cup of salt (rock salt works the best) over the ice cubes. Such mixture helps loosen the grime and debris from the grinding elements as salt is a very good abrasive material that helps to scrub the mechanism. You can also try to freeze vinegar in ice cube trays and run those down the garbage disposal. Try this method once or twice a month to keep your garbage disposal in fine working order.

3) Vinegar and Baking Soda

For stubborn odors you can use two ingredients that you probably already have at home: baking soda and vinegar. Sprinkle a half cup of baking soda down the disposal then add one cup of white vinegar. Allow the mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes while you boil a kettle of hot water. Then pour hot (or even boiling) water down the disposal as it is running to flush everything through.

Plumbers advise to arrange a garbage disposal clean-out on a weekly basis. It can be helpful even if you do not have garbage disposal in your sink. If you make a good flash, you’ll get rid of stinky odor in your kitchen. Follow these instructions, and you will never have to worry about the smell of your garbage disposal again.
